MY GIRL Thanks to Lois & Connie "Justin, this is my mother. Mom, this is Justin. And that's his brother, Brian." "Call me Eddie, please." she extended a small hand. "The name's Edna really, but..." she stopped when she realised Justin was just standing there like an idiot, staring at her outstrecthed hand. Justin was sure his mouth was wide open too but he couldn't shut it. His eyes went from Sam to the petite woman standing next to her then right back to Sam again. Eddie was quite a little woman too...literally...at about 5 ft 4inches. But everything else about her was...loud. Her short black hair had not an inkling of gray but red highlights. Her make-up was perfect and matched the flowery dress she wore, which emphasized her slim figure. Jaime's mother was beautiful. This can't be happening, Justin thought. Why did Sam bring...her mother...with her? Unless...Oh God. This was just another ploy to get him to give up Bella. For long moments, the four of them stood at the entrance to the house, saying
nothing, just staring at one another. "Is he going to be ok?" Eddie whispered the question to Brian as she passed by him. Brian couldn't help but grin. Justin was still not moving. "He'll be alright." "Good." she nodded. "For a minute there I thought I'd shocked him with my devestating good looks." she winked at Brian and made her way up the steps. He could hear her muttering as she walked, "All these steps...not good for a woman my age...thank God your father's dead, this may have killed him! Sam dear, why didn't you tell me the brother was so gorgeous? I would've worn my-" "Mom!" Sam hushed her. "Oh he can't hear me! Oh my. This is lovely." She had made it to the top of the steps and was admiring the kitchen and living area. Justin had finally gotten over his shock and was moving past Brian. "Hang on." Brian grabbed his arm. When Justin was looking up at him, he said, "Everything is going to be ok, you hear me?" Justin sighed. "I hope you're right." "Daddy!" Bella's scream had him running up the steps. The baby was staring at Eddie with a scared look in her eyes. Eddie turned when she saw Justin and Brian. "I was just trying to touch the child. She looks so much like...Jaime..." Bella ran into Brian's outstretched arms and wrapped her tiny arms around his neck, peeking at Eddie now that she was sure she was safe. "Give her some time. She doesn't do well with...women." Brian told her. Eddie raised an eyebrow. "Just like her grandmother..." Justin, who was glaring at Sam who was trying her best to ignore it, said, "Enough chit-chat. Who's hungry?" "Should she be eating this late?" Sam asked. They were all sitting on the table having dinner, Bella on her father's lap nibbling on a piece of chicken. "She ate already." Justin informed her coldly. Brian felt something rubbing against his foot and looked up at Justin to see what was wrong. But Justin was trying to pull the drumstick out of Bella's hand so it couldn't have been him... Brian moved his foot away, thinking he must be going mad but seconds later the foot was there again, trying to get under his pant leg. Brian looked up and noticed Eddie smiling at him. Oh God. Brian groaned inwardly. He shoved a forkful of potatoes into his mouth and tried to ignore the foot. It was only then he realised Justin was glaring at Sam, who was looking very flustered. "Are you trying to tell me how to raise my kid again?" Justin asked her. Sam took a sip of wine. "No, no. I didn't mean anything by it." "Good." "But really, should she even be up this late?" If looks could kill, Sam would be dead. Thankfully, Eddie intervened. "Sam, shut up dear." she turned to look at Bella, who now had her fist in Justin's potatoes. "She's got quite an appetite hasn't she?" Justin said nothing so to be less rude, Brian interjected. "Very much like her father. Don't ask me where it all goes though." "Straight to the ass it seems?" Eddie offered with a wink. "Noticed already?" Brian laughed. "Mother!" Sam scolded. Eddie rolled her eyes and turned to Justin again. "Can I hold her for a bit?" "I'm not sure..." Justin started but when he saw Brian's look, he paused. "Of course you can. You are her grandmother, after all." "A grandmother. Drat it." Eddie laughed. "But please, don't tell anyone. I do have an image to maintain." Justin smiled finally as he cleaned Bella's grubby hands. She fidgeted briefly before going to her grandmother. "Say Eddie." Eddie prompted. Bella poked her in the nose. "No, no pumpkin. Don't do that. Grandma hates being poked...unless it's over nine inches." Brian and Justin looked at each other then burst out laughing. Brian gave his young lover a look that said, 'lighten up' and Justin nodded, promising he would. Bella giggled too, but only because everyone else was laughing. Sam though, was unamused. "Mother, that's disgusting." "You're right. Nine is a bit off, isn't it?" Eddie said. To Bella, she said, "Say Eddie. And I'll give you a bar of chocolate." "Oh no." Justin groaned as he got up. "She'll be after you all night now." Brian got up to help his partner clear the table. "Eddie. E-d-d-i-e. C'mon James. Make grandma proud." But all Bella did was pull at Eddie's hair, trying to put it in her mouth. "Dada? Dwink?" Brian poured her some water, which Eddie gave her. "Didn't I tell you she was adorable, mother?" Sam said. "She is." Eddie agreed. She decided to try to get Bella to say her name one more time. "Say Eddie and you got yourself a president for the piggy bank." "Fwuck!" With Bella tucked away in bed, the four grown-ups sat on the sofa drinking coffee. Brian had a feeling the night wasn't going to end as good as it had begun and he knew he was right when he heard Sam clear her throat. "Dinner was lovely, Justin." she said. "And Brian." Brian said nothing, just waited. Eddie had stopped trying to touch him, something he was grateful for. Now, she was just staring at he and Justin. "Sam-" Justin started. "Wait. I know we started out on the wrong foot but it's different now." Sam pleaded. "You realised you couldn't get anywhere near Bella without Justin's consent, you mean. " Brian said coldly. Sam bit her lip, speechless for a moment, making it obvious Brian had hit the nail right on its head. "Brian dear, Sam means no harm." Eddie defended her daughter. "She just has a...weird way of doing things sometimes." "Weird is a fucking understatement." Brian agreed. "Do you see where Bella's gets her colourful vocabulary from mother?" Sam said angrily, standing up in the process. "Do you see why WE need to do something?" Brian stood up too. "Are you fucking preaching to me in my own house again?...And what the fuck do you think you NEED to do with my kid? Get that idea out of your head because you're not getting anywhere near her unless I'm around." Eddie touched Brian on the arm. "Let's all be calm now." Brian looked at Justin who was still sitting on the sofa opposite him, his head in his hands. "Are you ok? Do you have a headache?" Justin nodded. "Get me something, would you?" Brian went into the kitchen and returned a few minutes later with the pills and a glass of water, which Justin took in one gulp. He closed his eyes and tried to squeeze the pain away. When he re-opened his eyes, he stared at Sam and asked, "So why are you here?" Sam shifted uneaily under his gaze. "I told you...we wanted to see Bella." "Well you've seen her. Again." Eddie leaned forward. "We just want to get to know her, Justin. I think I'm entitled...as her grandmother." "Get one thing straight, Eddie, Justin doesn't owe you or anybody else anything." Brian said firmly. "He owes it to Jaime. And to Bella." "That's where you're wrong-" "Tell me something, Brian." Eddie interjected. "Why don't you and Justin look alike?" "Mother, don't change the topic!" Sam said. "I'm just curious Sam." Eddie said. "I mean, for brothers, they look nothing alike." "What's your point?" Brian asked coldly. Eddie smiled and said nothing for long moments. "No point. Answer me this instead. Jaime had every intention of raising Bella on her own, didn't she?" Brian looked across at Justin, who's blue eyes were now glistening. "Yes, she was going to raise the baby. But she's gone now and...and I'm still the father." Justin said softly. Eddie smiled. "Justin. Brian. Let's all be realistic now." "Hang on a second-" Brian protested. Eddie interrupted yet again. "How do you really think Jaime would feel... knowing that her baby girl is being raised by two homosexual men?"
