MY GIRL Six Months Later: “I’m fat, aren’t I?” Jaime muttered as she, Brian and Justin walked through the fruit section of their supermarket. She was now six months pregnant. Fortunately for Justin, one time was all it took for him to “knock her up.” But for the past couple months, his life was a living hell. She was ALWAYS hungry. She was ALWAYS over at their house and she was ALWAYS complaining. Brian never said anything but Justin knew he was amused by the whole thing. Justin, on the other hand, knew he was going crazy. Last night, Brian had asked him if he was feeling ok because he was looking a little pale, and Justin had looked right at him and said, “You’re not fat. You’re beautiful.” Brian wasn’t sure how to make it better for Justin. Besides, he was really
enjoying it. Lindsay hadn’t been as funny as Jaime was when she was pregnant.
Jaime would ask Justin to make her breakfast every morning. She’d pack away
eggs, sausages, pancakes, orange juice, coffee, cheesecake…anything in site.
Brian couldn’t bear to eat anything whenever she was around. Brian listened to his lover complain every night and tried hard not to laugh. He just nodded or shook his head, depending, but said absolutely nothing. He wasn’t given the chance to say much anyways. And today, Brian had left work early so he and Justin could do the grocery shopping. Justin had burst into tears on the phone begging Brian to get him away from his best friend for just one hour. Unfortunately, just as they were walking out the door, she caught them and insisted on coming along for the drive. She needed more shaving gel and a tub of peppermint ice-cream. When Brian heard Jaime’s question, he pushed at the half-filled cart and immediately started looking at everything on the shelves. Justin continued putting oranges into a plastic bag, ignoring her. “I am a fat cow. I am going to be fat for the rest of my life. My kid is gonna have a fat mama.” Jaime wailed. “Will you calm down.? You’re not fat. You’re pregnant. The two are not synonymous.” Justin muttered throwing her a mean look. “You try carrying around this bowling ball and see how you feel!” Jaime threw at him. She started chewing on some grapes. “And you can stop grinning, you old goat.” She tossed Brian’s way. “What the fuck did I do?” Brian muttered. He moved out of her way to avoid getting hit. “My kid will not hear that kind of language! Do you hear me, you bastard? And you can stop checking out that guy.” She added. “What guy?” Brian asked, immediately looking around. “Brian!” Justin gave him a mean look. “But I wasn’t looking at anyone.” He defended. Jaime winked at Brian. “Don’t mess with a pregnant woman, buddy.” She plopped a grape into her mouth. “Jaime, leave him alone. Go grab some napkins and paper plates and stuff.” Justin ordered. “What aisle is that?” she asked. “I don’t know. Just look around.” As soon as she left, Justin semi-collapsed on the cart. Brian rubbed his back. “That should get rid of her for a while.” Justin groaned. Brian knew she walked incredibly slow, pregnant or not. “Why did you let me do this?” Justin asked. Brian grinned. “She’s not that bad.” “Oh fuck off! You’re not home with her all day!” “So go to the store. That queen you have in charge will be happy to see you.” “Michel is more excited than anyone else. He annoys me on the phone, constantly calling out baby names. Everyone has fucking baby fever.” Justin noticed three bottles of sweet gerkins in the cart. “I bought her a bottle of those just yesterday!” He turned to Brian, the bottle in his hand. “How can someone eat an entire bottle of these things in one day? And do you know HOW she eats them? With peanut butter!” Brian cringed before he took it out of Justin’s hand and put it back in the cart. Pulling Justin into his arms, he kissed him quickly on the lips. “You’re making yourself crazy. Just calm down and relax.” “I need a fucking vacation.” Brian noticed Jaime walking back, a tin of cookies under her arm. In one hand she held a bottle of peanut butter and in the other, a giant size chocolate bar. At Brian’s amused look, she muttered. “I couldn’t find the aisle...” Justin shook his head, exasperated. “I’m fat; I have huge feet and I fart all day. Give me a break, would you?” Two months later: “Did you practice your breathing exercises?” Justin asked. “Yes! Quit nagging, would you.” Jaime responded. They were up on the rooftop soaking up the sun. Jaime was now eight months pregnant and complaining non-stop. Justin had figured out how to keep his sanity around her though – he sang in his head. Plus, he had realized that whenever he nagged her, she shut up. He was content. “So do you want her to have my hair colour or yours?” Jaime asked. Justin thought for a minute. “I don’t mind either way.” “Have you thought some more on the names?” “Not really. I am sticking to Bella.” “Brian and I like Sid.” “I am not naming my daughter Sid. Let Brian knock you up and then he can name her any thing he wants.” She laughed. They were quiet for a moment. Then she broke the silence again. “I want you to know something, Justin.” She said softly. “Yea?” “I love you, ok.” Justin smiled at her. “I love you too, James.” She touched his cheek. “If anything were to happen to me-“ “Don’t say that.” Justin got angry. “I’m just saying! I know nothing’s going to happen…but just in case…I’m just so scared.” He squeezed her hand. “You have me. I’ll be here for you always…and I’ll never let anything happen to you…or her.” Tears streamed down her face. “That’s all I needed to hear.” One month later: Justin woke up to the sound of an annoying ring. He looked around and noticed it was still dark. Nudging Brian, he grumbled, "Brian, answer the goddamn phone." Brian groaned before picking up the receiver. Justin heard him ask, “Are you ok? Ok. We’ll be right there. Hang on.” “What’s wrong?” Justin asked. Brian turned to him. “Jaime’s water just broke.” Brian nearly crashed the shiny silver car then and there, so surprised he was by the scream. “Breathe James, breathe.” Justin advised her. She gripped onto his blonde hair and tugged as another contraction came upon her. Brian heard Justin scream then. He looked into the rearview mirror and saw tears in Justin’s eyes. “Lay off the fucking hair, James!” He told her when it was over. “How about we trade places, you prick!” James shot back. “I didn’t ask for this!” “Well you didn’t say no either!” Justin saw her cringe. “Hold my hand, baby. It’s going to be ok.” He brushed hair away from her face and planted a kiss on her forehead. Hours later: “What the fuck’s taking so long?” Justin asked. Brian watched his lover pace back and forth. “She’s delivering a baby, Justin. Those things take a while.” Justin shot him a dirty look before moving to sit next to him. Brian took Justin’s hand in his. “Maybe you should have gone in with her…” Brian said. “Oh God no…I would have ended up on the floor in no time.” Justin responded with a grin. The two sat there waiting for a couple more hours and finally, Brian noticed a doctor walking towards them. He nudged Justin to get up. “Mr. Taylor?” the doctor asked. “That’s me.” Justin said. “You’re the baby’s father, yes?” “Yes. Is everything ok?” The doctor took a deep breath. “You have a beautiful baby girl, Mr. Taylor.” Justin broke out in one of his sunshine smiles, the ones that made Brian’s heart flip-flop in his chest. “Oh thank you!” Justin gushed. He turned to Brian. “I’m a daddy!” Brian smiled. “Now you don’t have just me to boss around.” The doctor took another deep breath. “Mr. Taylor?” “How’s Jaime. I totally forgot to ask. Is she still screaming for me to die a slow, slow death?” Justin laughed. “I’m sorry, Mr. Taylor. There were some difficulties with the birth. We tried everything that we could…but she wouldn’t stop bleeding…and-“ ”NO! Stop!” Justin felt as if everywhere was spinning. His body began to shake. “Make him stop, Brian!” Brian turned to the doctor. “Justin…” Justin started crying. “I’m sorry, sir. We tried everything…The nurse will be along shortly.” The doctor told Brian. Brian bit his lip. “Thank you.” He looked at Justin. His lover had collapsed against the sofa and was crying his eyes out. Brian knew this was going to be a long night.
